Fragments of a Besieged Landscape

The artwork emerges from an experimental process involving a series of acrylic paintings on handmade paper of variable dimensions, which is made using charcoal. It presents divided pieces or fragments of landscapes from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta as a way to highlight the problems that have affected this territory.

The work not only captures the natural beauty of the region but also seeks to reflect the deep wounds caused by human activity.

Deforestation and the illegal burning of mangroves are some of the main issues addressed in these pieces. The mangroves, essential for the ecological stability of the Ciénaga, have been devastated by these practices, leading to habitat loss for numerous species and contributing to soil erosion.

Also addressed is the construction of infrastructure, such as the Ciénaga-Barranquilla highway, a road that has interrupted the natural flow of water between the Ciénaga and the Caribbean Sea, exacerbating problems like soil salinization and the loss of biodiversity.

The charcoal-based paper and the paint are conceived as a medium to symbolically reconstruct a landscape fragmented by human activity. They also serve as a way to remind us of the fragility and the necessity of protecting these biomes and the ecosystems we inhabit.
